Graphic guide》Not all paper can be recycled! Why can’t e-invoices and tissue paper go in the recycling bin? 4 types of paper explained
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article explains how to properly recycle and dispose of 4 common types of paper used in daily life: shredded paper, thermal paper, photocopy paper and tissue paper. The Ministry of Environment says whether paper can be recycled depends on its material and processing, not on whether it has been torn up.
Facts
The Ministry of Environment says thermal paper has a special coating containing leuco dyes and developers on its surface. The coating produces text when heated, so no ink or toner is needed for printing.
Current paper recycling technology cannot effectively separate the special coating on thermal paper while leaving behind reusable paper fibers, so thermal paper must be disposed of as general waste.
In a press release issued on Feb. 15, 2026, the Ministry of Environment said most tissue paper packaging currently on the market is labeled “flushable” or “disperses in water.” People can check the label and flush the tissue paper down the toilet.
The Ministry of Environment classifies tissue paper rolls as recyclable cultural paper. As long as they are clean, they can be collected by recycling trucks.
The Hsinchu City Environmental Protection Bureau says salt-and-pepper chicken paper bags stained with oil, as well as dirty paper bags, should be disposed of as general waste in garbage trucks.

Why did ancient imperial consorts paint “2 red dots” at the corners of their mouths? It wasn’t for beauty! The mysterious marks helped the emperor
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article explores the history of the “面厴” makeup seen at the corners of imperial consorts’ mouths in period dramas, noting that it served both a cosmetic purpose and as a signal to avoid the emperor during menstruation. It details how the Tang-era 面厴 evolved from simple dots into diverse styles such as coin dots and apricot 面厴, and compares the practice with menstrual-avoidance customs in other dynasties, including Han-era gold rings and Five Dynasties red lanterns.
Facts
In The Empress of China, when Fan Bingbing’s Wu Zetian is crowned empress, she has a red makeup dot painted on each side of her mouth. This style of makeup is called “面厴.”
According to legend, Tang imperial consorts placed red marks at the corners of their mouths to signal that they should not be summoned to the emperor’s bed. Court ladies who saw the marks would leave them off the roster.
面厴 originally referred to dimple makeup. People in ancient times believed that dimples made a woman’s smile look more lively and charming, so they used rouge to add decorative dots near the corners of the mouth.
After the盛唐 period, face-shaped ornaments diversified, including the 「coin dot」, which resembled a coin; the 「apricot ornament」, shaped like an apricot; and the 「flower ornament」, decorated with floral patterns.
During the Han dynasty, when a concubine was menstruating, she would wear a gold ring on her finger to remind the emperor that she should not be summoned to his bed. The practice was described in records as 「marking the menstrual period」.

Price differences between floors in some homes on the market are quite pronounced, reaching as much as 360,000 per ping.

Why hasn't the Great Wall collapsed despite being built without reinforced concrete? They used 2 major natural wonders of technology, yet the Xiongnu and other outsiders couldn't defeat them for 2000 years
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article examines why the Great Wall of China has stood for two thousand years, pointing out that Qin dynasty craftsmen used 2 natural high-tech innovations—sticky rice mortar and alkali-salt chemical reactions—to give building materials strength and seismic resistance comparable to modern reinforced concrete, successfully resisting Xiongnu incursions and maintaining peace along the frontier.
Facts
The Great Wall of China was first built during the Qin dynasty and still stands tall after enduring more than 2,000 years of wind and rain.
Qin dynasty craftsmen used sticky rice mortar as a building material, made from sticky rice cooked into a thick paste, slaked lime and sand.
Once hardened, sticky rice mortar is every bit as strong and dense as modern reinforced concrete, with excellent seismic resistance and toughness.
On remote desert and Gobi sections, Qin dynasty builders mixed high-salt-content reeds with highly alkaline sand and gravel, triggering an alkali-salt chemical reaction that produced a powerful adhesive.
Construction of the Great Wall of China took approximately 9 years, with the aim of linking and expanding the existing defensive barriers of various states to protect against the Xiongnu.

長庚大學’s Center for Advanced Post-Silicon Heterogeneous Materials successfully met the high-performance challenge target set out in the international technology roadmap for 2031.
The research team grew single-layer BCN material on a 2-inch wafer, with a continuous structure and a thickness of about one atom, as well as high mobility and uniformity.
The single-layer BCN technology could eventually be integrated with n-type 2D semiconductors and widely used in 3D monolithic integrated circuits, ultra-low-power logic circuits and advanced packaging.
Project lead Tong Chun-chih said the design uses a dual-precursor system made up of monomethylamine borane (MMAB) and ammonia borane (AB).
長庚大學 has established the Center for Advanced Post-Silicon Heterogeneous Materials, led by internationally renowned expert Tong Chun-chih.
