Should you flush a squat toilet with your foot or your hand? Japanese giant reveals the right answer—and why 99% of Taiwanese get it wrong
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
Japanese bathroom-fixture giant TOTO says traditional squat toilets are designed to be flushed by pressing the lever by hand; stepping on it can damage the equipment. Experts recommend using a piece of toilet paper when operating the lever to maintain hygiene and protect public property, and explain how to identify hand-press and foot-operated flush mechanisms.
Facts
Leading Japanese bathroom-fixture maker TOTO has revealed that traditional squat toilets were originally designed for hand operation.
Using your foot to operate a traditional squat toilet can damage its internal structure and shorten its service life.
Excessive force from stepping on the flush lever can directly deform and damage parts inside the flush valve, making repairs more difficult.
Repeated, vigorous friction from shoe soles can also strip the exterior metal plating, causing pipes to rust or malfunction prematurely.
Most public facilities use hand-press mechanisms because foot-operated mechanisms are complicated to assemble and cost more to build and maintain.
Hand-press flush mechanisms are usually installed about half a person's height above the ground, around waist level on a wall, and typically consist of a long, cylindrical metal rod.
Foot-operated flush mechanisms are installed low to the ground and feature a flat metal pedal with clearly visible anti-slip grooves.
