Serving the emperor in ancient times wasn’t just about sex! Consorts had to follow 3 strict SOPs, and the last is too disturbing to imagine

This article examines the strict rules governing Qing dynasty consorts when summoned to the emperor’s bedchamber, including being searched and wrapped in a quilt, being forbidden to make a sound to prevent assassination, and mandatory contraception. It reveals how the protection of the emperor’s safety came at the expense of women’s dignity.
Facts
Before being summoned to the emperor’s bedchamber, Qing dynasty consorts had to remove all their clothes for eunuchs to search them, then be wrapped in a quilt and carried by eunuchs to the imperial bed.
During the emperor’s night visit, the concubines were strictly forbidden to make a sound, to prevent their voices from masking unusual noises made by an assassin sneaking in.
At the end of the visit, eunuchs from the Palace Attendants’ Office would shout “Call it off” to forcibly end the encounter, then ask the emperor, “Keep her or not?”
If the emperor answered “Don’t keep her,” the eunuchs would use a specific technique to forcibly prevent the concubine from becoming pregnant.
Qing emperors chose their companions for the night using “green-head plaques,” and concubines could tip eunuchs to have their plaques placed in a prominent position.
