Illustrated guide: Dry noodles can get bugs even in the cupboard! It’s not just white rice that gets infested. Experts explain “where the bugs come from” and show how to store food properly.
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article explores why unopened dry noodles can still become infested, noting that pests may originate during production or transport, or enter through gaps in the packaging. Experts recommend storing noodles in a cool, dry place and transferring them to an airtight container after opening. If pests are found, discard the noodles and clean the cupboard.
Pests may chew through thinner packaging or get in through folds and seams. Paper, thin cardboard, and some plastic, foil and cellophane packaging carry a higher risk.
The larvae of the Indianmeal moth may leave webbing on the surface of infested food. Even if no adult moths are immediately visible, an infestation may already have occurred.
The 衛生福利部食品藥物管理署 quoted 張宏銘, a researcher at the 中華穀類食品工業技術研究所, as saying that dry noodles have a low moisture content, making them suitable for storage at room temperature.
The University of Minnesota recommends discarding food confirmed to be infested by pantry pests rather than simply removing the visible bugs.

Why did ancient consorts all wear a white scarf around their necks? 3 uses TV dramas never mentioned, so embarrassing they're hard to talk about
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article examines the historical origins and three uses of the “longhua” (white scarf) worn by Qing dynasty imperial consorts. The accessory served not only to keep out the cold and enhance appearance, but also as a means of identifying rank: differences in embroidery complexity distinguished status and maintained order in the inner palace.
Facts
The white scarf worn by Qing dynasty imperial consorts was known as “longhua” or a neck scarf. It mainly served as a “false collar,” preventing the neck from being exposed or the skin from chafing.
The longhua scarf added an understated layer to the colorful Qing dynasty court attire with its elaborate embroidery, complemented the neckline, and lent a dignified, elegant air.
After the Qing dynasty established its capital in Beijing, the northern autumn and winter climate was bitterly cold. Manchu women could use the finely made longhua to block the wind and cold and keep warm.
The embroidery designs and level of intricacy on longhua served as visible markers of the inner palace's hierarchy, helping the emperor identify consorts' ranks precisely.
The longhua worn by the empress and senior consorts (imperial noble consorts, noble consorts, and consorts) could feature extremely intricate, lavish embroidery of flowers, auspicious clouds, or exquisite patterns to display their preeminent status.

If a worker aged 52 with 22 years of labor insurance coverage died at 54 while remaining insured, benefits for the family would be estimated at about 1.6 million.
If the worker described above left labor insurance and joined national pension insurance, the funeral benefit would be estimated at about 98,000.
The labor insurance annuity system took effect on Jan. 1, ROC year 98; the former lump-sum system applies only to those who qualified for coverage before that date.
Another requirement for a lump-sum benefit under the former labor insurance system is at least 25 years of labor insurance coverage and retirement at age 50 or older.

Why should you open your mouth during an air raid? It’s not for breathing—the real reason is something many people don’t know
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
The Ministry of National Defense’s “Taiwan Public Safety Guide” says people should slightly open their mouths when taking shelter during an air raid to equalize pressure and protect the eardrums and lungs from blast waves. It also provides guidance on proper positions and precautions for different situations.
Facts
The Ministry of National Defense’s “Taiwan Public Safety Guide” advises people to slightly open their mouths when taking shelter from an air raid to equalize pressure from an explosion and reduce harm to the eardrums and lungs.
Shock waves from high-energy explosions can cause what is known as “primary blast injury,” with air-filled organs such as the ears and lungs particularly vulnerable.
Overpressure from an explosion can rupture the eardrum, damage structures in the middle ear and even affect the inner ear. Injuries may cause tinnitus, ear pain, hearing loss or dizziness.
Powerful blast waves can tear lung tissue and cause bleeding, bruising and swelling. Some victims may have lung injuries even without obvious external chest wounds.
According to Ministry of National Defense guidance, people sheltering indoors should stay away from exterior walls, doors and windows and sit against a wall in a suitable location. Outdoors, they should lie face down and, if they can determine the direction of the incoming attack, turn their backs to the blast.
The middle ear is connected to the nasopharynx through the Eustachian tube, which regulates air pressure in the middle ear. It may briefly open when a person swallows or yawns, helping to equalize pressure.
Blast lung injury can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing or coughing up blood, and some symptoms may not appear immediately after an explosion.

Should shredded paper go in recycling or regular trash? The environmental protection bureau reveals the correct way to dispose of it, so you won’t lose NT$6,000 for putting it in the wrong bin
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
The environmental protection bureau has issued guidance on recycling shredded paper, stressing that although it can be recycled, it must be sealed in a bag and handed in directly. Dumping it loose is prohibited and may result in a fine. The guidance also lists laminated paper and thermal paper among paper-like materials that should go in regular trash to ensure recycling quality.
Facts
Although shredded paper is recyclable waste with reuse value, its small size means it can easily blow away. If it is disposed of improperly by dumping it loose, violators may face a fine of up to NT$6,000 under the Waste Disposal Act.
Hsinchu City and environmental protection bureaus across Taiwan have clarified that shredded paper can indeed be recycled, but strict rules apply when handing it to sanitation crews: it must not be dumped loose and must be sealed and packaged together.
Taichung City’s Environmental Protection Bureau said that many types of paper with chemical coatings, plastic film or contamination on the surface cannot be recycled. Putting them in recycling bins by mistake could instead spoil the quality of an entire batch, so they should be disposed of as general waste.
People who fail to separate recyclables from general waste as required may be fined NT$1,200 to NT$6,000 under the Waste Disposal Act.
Specially processed paper includes laminated paper, sticker backing paper (release paper), transfer paper, sandpaper and waste paper with a glossy plastic coating. These are not paper-recycling pitfalls.
