The smuggled servers contained high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) made in the United States and designed specifically for developing artificial intelligence.
Greg Lui secretly shipped advanced computer servers subject to strict export controls to China via third countries Malaysia and Singapore.
Greg Lui operated a technology company called Earthmade Computer as a front from 2023 to 2024.
Bill Essayli, a federal prosecutor in California, said Greg Lui could face up to 50 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
The U.S. government continues to use export controls to strictly block semiconductor giants such as Nvidia from shipping top-tier chips to China.
Are all traffic fines used to improve traffic? Taiwan People's Party exposes government’s “sneaking in traffic-enforcement technology equipment”: It doesn’t even know how to pay its respects
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ proposed revision to the rules governing the use of traffic fines drew fierce criticism from Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang, who accused the government of trying to use fines to buy traffic-enforcement technology equipment instead of improving safety.
Facts
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications today (2) announced a proposed revision to the “Regulations Governing the Distribution and Use of Revenue from Road Traffic Violation Fines,” stipulating that all future road traffic fine revenue will be allocated to improving traffic safety and enforcement.
The Taiwan People's Party caucus in the Legislative Yuan previously proposed a referendum on earmarking traffic fines, which passed in a 59-to-51 vote with cooperation between the KMT and TPP in the legislature.
The Central Election Commission ruled that the referendum proposed by the Taiwan People's Party did not meet the “initiation or rejection of major policies” requirement under the Referendum Act and decided not to accept it.
A Ministry of Transportation and Communications official said at a press conference that the revision did not eliminate the possibility of using the funds for traffic-enforcement technology.
Huang Kuo-chang pointed out that last year the Ministry of Transportation and Communications sparked public outrage by adding traffic-enforcement equipment to the list of uses for traffic fines, and then put the plan on hold in April this year.
