Why were the tails of ancient warhorses “tied up”?3 important functions left out of textbooks;without tying them, the entire army could be wiped out
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article examines the military significance of tying the tails of the terracotta warriors’ horses from the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, explaining that it was essential preparation for ensuring battlefield mobility. The example of Duke Qing of Qi nearly being captured at the Battle of An, during the Spring and Autumn period, because his horse’s tail was not tied up illustrates the serious consequences of overlooking details。
Facts
The horses’ tails in the Museum of the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang are carefully braided and tied, a crucial detail that could mean life or death for ancient soldiers。
Tying up warhorses’ tails was a practical military necessity that ancient armies had to strictly carry out before battle, not merely a matter of appearance。
If a warhorse’s mane and tail were not properly tied before setting out, the tail could easily whip into the chariot’s wheels, axle or reins at high speed, causing the vehicle to jam instantly or even overturn。
The horses depicted in the “Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow” unearthed from the Leitai Han tomb in Gansu, the Han dynasty terracotta warriors and horses in Xuzhou, and the stone carvings of the six steeds at Emperor Taizong’s Zhaoling Mausoleum all have their tails neatly tied up.

Major boon for bond ETFs! Government approves extending “exemption from securities transaction tax on sales” for another 10 years; “this 1 category of ETF” also benefits! A guide to how much investors can save
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
The Executive Yuan has approved a draft bill to extend the securities transaction tax concession for bond ETFs through 2036 and add an exemption for actively managed bond ETFs, aiming to reduce trading costs and promote capital market development.
Facts
The Executive Yuan has approved a draft amendment to Article 2-1 of the Securities Transaction Tax Act, extending the suspension of securities transaction tax on corporate bonds, financial debentures and passively managed bond ETFs through December 31, 2036.
The amendment would, for the first time, include actively managed bond ETFs in the scope of the securities transaction tax suspension, with the measure scheduled to run from January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2036.
Under current regulations, corporate bonds and other government-approved securities are taxed at 1 per mille of the transaction amount. On a transaction of 1 million yuan, the suspension would save 1,000 yuan in taxes.
The Ministry of Finance estimates that the issuance scale of passively and actively managed bond ETFs could grow from about 3.02 trillion yuan in 2025 to about 12.75 trillion yuan in 2036.
The draft bill removes the current restrictions on the investment targets of passively managed bond ETFs. Related regulations would henceforth be handled by the financial authorities within their respective jurisdictions.
Premier Cho Jung-tai said the amendment would help achieve the policy goal of establishing an “Asian Asset Management Center.”

With 3,000 concubines in the imperial harem, who would spend the night with the emperor? Ancient emperors invented 5 ways to choose consorts! It wasn’t just drawing lots—the methods got more and more thrilling.

These included drawing lots, hanging lanterns, the “amorous arrow,” choosing consorts by butterfly and the “lucky sheep cart” method.
Facts
Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty formalized the Jing Shi Fang system, using the drawing of lots to decide whom he would spend the night with.

Emperor Wu of Jin, Sima Yan, used the “lucky sheep cart” system. Some concubines reportedly used salt water and bamboo twigs to lure the sheep and win his favor.
