More than 20 years ago, metal-detecting enthusiast Hughes found a brass padlock from a 400-year-old shipwreck on a beach in Port Talbot, South Wales, Britain.
威爾斯國家博物館 and 卡迪夫大學 used micro-CT scanning technology to crack a combination lock with more than 1000 possible combinations.
The brass padlock has 4 rings, each engraved with 6 different letters, for a total of 1296 possible combinations.
After the 3rd scan, the research team was able to see through the lock's mechanical structure and crack the correct code, “ANCE.”
The artifacts were confirmed to have come from the Ann Francis, which sank in a storm in December 1583 while returning from Spain.
Extra letters engraved at both ends of the padlock cannot be moved and have no connection to the code; they are believed to have been intended to mislead potential thieves.
Willis, a senior curator at Swansea Museum, explained the padlock's sophisticated design and anti-theft features.
