Why did midwives always call for “hot water” when ancient imperial consorts gave birth? 3 real uses not shown in TV dramas—going without it could cost lives
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
This article examines three reasons ancient midwives insisted on having hot water: to clean blood from the mother, to boil water for sterilization and prevent infection, and to keep the mother and baby warm. It reveals the historical reality behind scenes in period dramas.
Facts
It was not until the Eastern Han period that “midwives” specializing in childbirth gradually emerged among the general public.
The first use of hot water by ancient midwives was to wash blood, sweat and amniotic fluid from the mother.
In ancient times, ordinary people got most of their water from rivers or wells, which could contain bacteria invisible to the naked eye.
Boiling water and then cooling it to a suitable temperature before use could reduce microorganisms in the water and lower the risk of infection during washing.
The third use of hot water was to maintain the body temperatures of the mother and newborn, preventing cold during childbirth from adding to the strain on their bodies.

The chip licensing lawsuit between 高通 and Arm has reached an impasse after the jury failed to reach a verdict, with proceedings set to resume next Tuesday. The core dispute concerns the transfer of Nuvia technology licenses and the terms of a new architecture license. The outcome could affect licensing models and the competitive landscape across the semiconductor industry.
Facts
The chip licensing lawsuit between 高通 and Arm has hit another impasse, with the jury yet to decide whether Arm breached a contract or interfered with 高通's partnership with Meta. The case will resume next Tuesday (the 13th).
高通 acquired chip design company Nuvia in 2021, hoping to incorporate its technology into its proprietary Oryon CPU architecture for PC chips, mobile phone chips and AI computing platforms.
Arm argues that the Nuvia licensing agreement cannot automatically be transferred to 高通 and has demanded that 高通 stop using the technology. 高通, meanwhile, says it already holds a valid license to Arm's architecture, which remains in effect through 2033.
高通 accused Arm of withholding software patches and tools needed for its chip designs, in breach of their licensing agreement, and of previously attempting to undermine 高通's business partnership with Meta.
After 軟銀集團 acquired control of Arm in 2016, Arm gradually shifted from licensing technology needed to manufacture chips to selling its own chips, changing its relationship with partners.
高通 attorney Karen Dunn said this puts 高通 at a significant disadvantage because its entire chip business depends on Arm and on Arm honoring its contracts and commitments.
