This article explains the rules for bringing a loved one’s ashes back to Taiwan after they die overseas. The Ministry of the Interior confirms that the ashes can be transported as carry-on or checked luggage, and China Airlines and EVA Air allow a seat to be purchased for an urn. No quarantine inspection is required upon arrival; travelers can pass through the green channel.
Facts
The Ministry of the Interior’s Department of Civil Affairs and Ceremonies has clearly stated that after a loved one dies overseas, family members may bring the ashes back to Taiwan as cargo or luggage. If accompanying them in person, they may choose to check the ashes or carry them on board.
中華航空 and 長榮航空 both list urns as items eligible for an extra seat in the cabin, allowing passengers to purchase an additional seat for an urn.
華航 and 長榮 require passengers seeking a separate seat for an urn to contact them or complete the application process at least 48 hours before departure.
Taipei Customs of the Customs Administration, Ministry of Finance, said that family members entering Taiwan by plane while carrying ashes in their arms can generally use the green channel, provided they have no other items that must be declared by law.

Should greasy takeout containers go in the general trash or recycling? The Environment Ministry explains how to dispose of them correctly; toss them in the wrong bin and you could lose 6,000 yuan
Published ・ Source Taiwan | 風傳媒
The Ministry of Environment’s Resource Circulation Administration clarified that paper food containers are legally classified as “waste paper containers” that must be recycled and cannot be mixed with ordinary paper because they have a plastic lining. The New Taipei City Environmental Protection Department published a three-step cleaning guide and warned that violations can incur a fine of up to 6,000 yuan, addressing public confusion about how clean the containers must be and how to sort them.
Facts
Under the law, paper food containers are classified as “waste paper containers,” not ordinary paper.
Failure to sort paper food containers as required can result in a fine of up to 6,000 yuan under the Waste Disposal Act.
To make paper food containers waterproof, greaseproof and heat-resistant, their surfaces are usually laminated with an extremely thin polyethylene plastic film.
Once paper food containers enter the processing system, specialized hydraulic pulping equipment at professional processing plants is required to separate the paper fibers from the plastic film.
The New Taipei City Environmental Protection Department’s guide to avoiding a fine includes three steps: dump food scraps, rinse with clean water, then flatten the container and place it separately in the recycling truck.
