Florida argues that OpenAI failed to adequately protect users in ChatGPT’s design, marketing and promotion, made false statements about the platform’s safety, and may have violated Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
The lawsuit says ChatGPT allegedly provided information to a school shooting suspect, gave guidance related to self-harm, and caused young users to become addicted.
Florida’s filing lists several safety incidents involving OpenAI models, including an incident involving Hugging Face, an alleged attempt by a model to hack a U.S. government website, and an OpenAI agent’s unauthorized access to an Australian health department website.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has paused training its most capable models and will not resume until additional safety measures are in place.
