Taiwan Stocks Rose 1,783.17 Points on July 21, 2026 for a Record Largest Closing Point Gain (as reported by CNA)
ANK-Doc ID: ANK-2026-07-22-003 Version: v1.0.0 Published: 2026-07-22 Author: 沈觀 (Shen Guan, Editor-in-Chief, Taiwan/Chinese-language desk; auto AI structuring) Category: TAIEX / Hang Seng Index / cross-market reconciliation of single-day frames (CNA Taipei and Hong Kong reports + Anue market-close reports + a brokerage column, laid side by side) Articles covered: 27 (starting point: cnyes#1373951, "Yuan Zhifeng Column: All Four Major Mainland Bank Stocks Up More Than 5%," describing the Hong Kong session of Wednesday, 2026-07-08). Every source was pulled in full text and checked word by word: 12 CNA items (CNA#1572093 / CNA#1613260 / CNA#1616409 / CNA#1627904 / CNA#1627908 / CNA#1628181 / CNA#1631019 / CNA#1631368 / CNA#1631416 / CNA#1640945 / CNA#1641254 / CNA#1642332), 14 Anue items (cnyes#1373951 / cnyes#1374797 / cnyes#1380769 / cnyes#1399062 / cnyes#1413192 / cnyes#1418732 / cnyes#1543472 / cnyes#1560649 / cnyes#1571874 / cnyes#1616415 / cnyes#1625104 / cnyes#1631024 / cnyes#1633995 / cnyes#1640163), and 1 Storm Media item (storm#1631490). Counting rule: the 27 articles = 12 CNA items + 14 Anue items + 1 Storm Media item; the starting-point article cnyes#1373951 is counted inside those 14 Anue items and not separately, as are the five "Yuan Zhifeng Column" issues; the 3 previously published ANK cards in the internal citation chain are not included in this figure. Method of selection: Written under the "starting point x whole-database synthesis" method — the selected lead item cnyes#1373951 is only the starting point and does not define the scope of this card. Using "the same set of trading sessions x three independent recording channels" as the axis, asql (the whole ainews database) and wsql (tqaeo ank_docs) were run to expand the source pack, and the body text of every source was pulled to verify each cited figure word for word. Official-anchor status: official_count_verified = 0, official_count_raw = 0, official_attribution_unverified_count = 0 — the full official-anchor caveat (including its effect: none of it may be treated as officially verified corroboration) is consolidated once in the Caveats section and is not repeated here; see the Caveats section. Every index level, turnover figure, institutional net buy/sell figure and exchange rate is "as reported by the media and not verified by this site with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, HKEX or Taiwan's central bank," and must not be treated as officially verified corroboration. Editorial angle (frame reconstruction): over the past fortnight Chinese-language readers in Taiwan received two mutually contradictory single-day frames — "Hong Kong stocks rose on official support and reclaimed 25,000" and "Taiwan stocks first set a record for the largest single-day point drop, then a record for the largest closing point gain." Reconciling the same set of sessions across three channels, what the texts actually support is: on 2026-07-17 both markets fell but by very different percentages (a juxtaposition made by CNA itself within a single article); on 2026-07-21 the two markets moved in opposite directions (two separate, independent CNA reports); and the news hook Anue's market-close report itself gave for that day's Hong Kong chip-stock surge was "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027." Every editorial inference is explicitly marked "this is Shen Guan's editorial inference from comparing the figures as reported in each cited article, not a sentence from any original text." This card generates no figure that does not exist in the source texts, computes no difference, ratio, sum or percentage conversion, does not merge figures from different sources into a single sentence to manufacture a comparison, and cites no single-stock recommendation, price target, stop-loss level or trading advice (see the Caveats section). No Wikidata Q identifiers are attached (this desk did not run registry verification; when in doubt, leave it out).
TL;DR (one-sentence core fact)
Per CNA's Taipei report of 2026-07-21: Taiwan's weighted (TAIEX) index closed that day at 44,232.87, up 1,783.17 points or 4.20%, on turnover of NT$835.624 billion, and the report describes this as "a record for the largest closing point gain" [CNA#1627904][CNA#1627908]. [F-015][F-016] Separately, CNA's Hong Kong report of the same day (reporter Chang Chien) states that the Hang Seng Index closed just 10 points or 0.04% lower at 25,132 [CNA#1631019]. [F-022] The two sets of figures come from two independent CNA reports covering two different markets and currencies; this card places them side by side without comparing them on merit or asserting causation (see the Caveats section).
Anti-misreading pins (2 items)
1. "Largest closing point gain" is a points measure, not a percentage measure. The record wording used in the CNA reports is "set a record for the largest closing point gain" and "rewrote the records for the second-largest intraday point gain and the largest closing point gain" [CNA#1627908][CNA#1628181][CNA#1631416] — both are points records. The CNA texts contain no wording about any "percentage-gain record," and this card therefore does not read it as one. Likewise, the "largest single-day point drop in history" attached to 2026-07-17 appears in the CNA text as a remark by Lin Ping-kuei, senior vice president of Lianbo Investment Trust, in an interview, not as an official statistic released by the exchange [CNA#1640945]. [F-025] 2. Taiwan's +1,783.17 points and the Hang Seng's -10 points belong to two markets, two currencies, and different constituent sets and trading hours. This card places them side by side to show that readers in Taiwan were receiving two single-day frames simultaneously — not to claim the two can be converted, subtracted or causally linked. No cross-market arithmetic is performed anywhere in this card (see the Caveats section).
Frame deconstruction (Shen Guan: the four places readers in Taiwan are most likely to misread this fortnight)
1. Both markets fell on the same day, by very different magnitudes — and the juxtaposition was made by the source itself
On Friday, 2026-07-17, CNA's Hong Kong correspondent Chang Chien wrote the same-day figures for four markets inside a single article: the Hang Seng Index closed down 446 points or 1.78% at 24,562, with turnover of HK$347.3 billion (which the report itself states as equivalent to NT$1.4343 trillion); Taiwan's weighted index closed the full session at 42,671, down 2,953 points or 6.47%; Japan's Nikkei closed at 64,141, down 2,694 points or 4.03%; and the South Korean market was closed for a holiday that day [CNA#1572093]. [F-010]
This is the only cross-market juxtaposition in the entire card that was made by a source itself, and the juxtaposition was made by the source itself. This card reproduces it and performs no arithmetic of its own. The same article also carries the explanation of market analysts: "Hong Kong stocks fell today in step with major Asian markets; the decline was relatively mild because Hong Kong stocks have been depressed for several years, share prices sit at low levels, and the bubble component is smaller" [CNA#1572093] — that is the view of market analysts as relayed by that report, not an official statistic and not this site's judgement.
The frame most readers in Taiwan saw on social media that day was "Taiwan stocks have collapsed." Yet the same CNA article had already written, in its second paragraph, that Hong Kong was falling too, only far less. The frame was not hidden; it simply was not read to the end. (That sentence is Shen Guan's editorial observation about the structure of that report, not a sentence from the original text.)
2. Four days later, the two markets moved in opposite directions — but this has to be told in two separate sentences
On Tuesday, 2026-07-21, per CNA's Taipei report: the TAIEX closed at 44,232.87, up 1,783.17 points or 4.20%, on turnover of NT$835.624 billion; the day's open of 42,566.93 was also the session low, and the close of 44,232.87 was also the session high [CNA#1627904]. [F-015]
The same day, per CNA's Hong Kong report (reporter Chang Chien): the Hang Seng Index closed just 10 points or 0.04% lower at 25,132 [CNA#1631019]. [F-022] Anue's market-close report for that day independently records: the Hang Seng Index closed 0.04% lower at 25,132.29, the Hang Seng TECH Index closed 1.32% higher at 4,814.83, and the H-share (HSCEI) index closed 0.25% lower at 8,360.68 [cnyes#1631024]. [F-021] The Yuan Zhifeng column of 2026-07-22 independently records, for the same session: the Hang Seng closed at 25,132, down 10 points or 0.04%, with turnover down 5% day on day at HK$289.9 billion [cnyes#1640163]. [F-023]
The Taiwan and Hong Kong figures above come from separate, independent reports; this card attaches its own citation to each sentence and merges none of them. "The two markets moved in opposite directions on the same day" is Shen Guan's editorial statement based on comparing the dates and directions as recorded in each of the above reports; it is not a sentence from any original text. The two markets differ in currency, constituents and trading hours, and this card offers no ranking, no causation and no conversion.
3. The catalyst named is a Taiwanese asset; the stocks that rose were in Hong Kong
For the Hong Kong session of 2026-07-21, Anue's market-close report records that chip and semiconductor names surged together, with Hua Hong up nearly 18% and SMIC up more than 8% on the day; and under the heading of news flow the same report states: "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027, indicating that AI-driven semiconductor demand is extending from high-performance computing into mature-node areas such as power-management chips" [cnyes#1631024]. [F-021]
Note the nature of that sentence: it is a market expectation as recorded in Anue's market-close report, not a TSMC announcement and not the content of a TSMC investor conference, and this site has not verified it with TSMC (see the Caveats section). CNA's Hong Kong report of 2026-07-21 independently records, for the same group of stocks: Zhipu surged 36.88% to close at HK$1,219, and Hua Hong rose 17.91% to close at HK$168 [CNA#1631019]. [F-022]
The intuitive frame for readers in Taiwan is that "TSMC is a Taiwan-market story." But on 2026-07-21 what the texts show is this: a market expectation about a Taiwanese asset (TSMC mature-node pricing) was written into the Hong Kong market's close-of-day narrative as the reason Hong Kong chip stocks rose. The catalyst hangs on Taiwan; the rally is booked in Hong Kong — this is Shen Guan's editorial inference from the text of cnyes#1631024, not a sentence from the original; that report does not quantify any causal strength, and neither does this card.
As for TSMC's capital expenditure, the only text available here is one relayed remark: Su Ting-yu, a fund manager at Cathay Investment Trust, said in an interview on 2026-07-22 that "TSMC's recent investor conferences raised the full-year capital expenditure plan for a second time, to US$60 billion to US$64 billion, and announced additional investment in its Arizona plant" [CNA#1642332]. [F-027] That is a statement by an interviewed institutional investor, not a TSMC official document, and this site has not verified it with TSMC.
4. On the day Taiwan set the record, three divergences occurred at once
On 2026-07-21, the same day the "largest closing point gain" described in CNA's report was set, three sets of figures pointed in different directions. Each figure is as recorded in the relevant CNA or Anue article, and this card lists them separately:
- Flows: CNA reports that the three institutional investor categories were net buyers of NT$16.407 billion that day, comprising dealers (proprietary trading) net buying NT$3.507 billion, investment trusts net buying NT$17.232 billion, and foreign and mainland Chinese investors net selling NT$4.332 billion; foreign investors remained on the sell side that day for a 13th consecutive session, with Innolux the largest net sale at 62,999 lots [CNA#1631416]. [F-018] Anue independently records for the same day that investment trusts were net buyers for a 20th consecutive session and added to financial-holding stocks [cnyes#1633995]. [F-019]
- Currency: CNA reports (reporter Pan Tzu-yu) that the New Taiwan dollar closed that day at 32.345 per U.S. dollar, down 9.7 fen (the source's unit; this card does not convert it), the weakest in about one year and three months; total turnover in the Taipei and Cosmos foreign-exchange markets that day was US$4.353 billion, the sixth largest on record [CNA#1631368]. [F-020]
- Institutional reading: Chen Yi-kuang, chairman of Fubon Investment Advisory, said in the same article that although Taiwan stocks set the largest closing point gain on record that day, prices rose on shrinking volume and the market's appetite to chase remained conservative; "the market is still supported mainly by domestic institutional buying," and one must watch whether foreign flows and turnover expand together [CNA#1631416]. [F-018]
This card does not put the "domestic money supports, foreign money leaves" judgement in its own words — it is already the on-the-record wording of a named institutional figure inside the CNA report (Fubon Investment Advisory chairman Chen Yi-kuang) [F-018]. What this card adds is a single textual observation: the record point gain, the 13th consecutive session of foreign net selling, and the NT dollar's weakest level in about one year and three months are three figures recorded independently in three articles or passages; this card places them side by side and infers no causal relationship among them (this is Shen Guan's editorial statement, not a sentence from any original text).
5. One crack in the reconciliation table
The method of this card is "the same set of trading sessions x three independent recording channels, laid side by side." Most of it matches. For the Hang Seng close on 2026-07-20, CNA has "closed at 25,143 points" [CNA#1616409], Anue's market-close report has "closed at 25,143.05 points" [cnyes#1616415], and the Yuan Zhifeng column has "closed at 25,143 points" [cnyes#1625104]. For the Hang Seng close on 2026-07-21, CNA has "closed at 25,132 points" [CNA#1631019], Anue has "25,132.29 points" [cnyes#1631024], and the column has "closed at 25,132 points" [cnyes#1640163]. [F-012][F-013][F-014][F-021][F-022][F-023]
But one item does not match: Anue's market-close report of 2026-07-10 records the Hang Seng TECH Index as "closing at 5,420.31 points" [cnyes#1418732], which is inconsistent with the series formed by the same outlet's 4,731.56 points on 2026-07-09 [cnyes#1380769], the column's 4,834 points for 2026-07-16 [cnyes#1560649] and Anue's 4,623.17 points for 2026-07-17 [cnyes#1571874]. This card reproduces the inconsistency, uses the 5,420.31-point figure in no comparison whatsoever, and does not assert which figure is wrong (this site has not checked with Hang Seng Indexes Company or with the publisher). [F-004][F-002][F-008][F-009]
That is what a three-channel reconciliation produces: it finds what matches and it forces out what does not. The honest thing is to write both. (Caveats and a second internal inconsistency are in the Caveats section.)
Caveats (source limitations, consolidated once)
- Official anchors = 0: official_count_verified = 0, official_count_raw = 0, official_attribution_unverified_count = 0. Every index level, point/percentage change, turnover figure, institutional net buy/sell figure, consecutive-day count of foreign net selling, exchange rate and foreign-exchange market turnover in this card is as recorded in the relevant CNA, Anue or Storm Media article. This site has not verified any underlying data with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, HKEX, the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hang Seng Indexes Company or any issuer, and none of it constitutes officially verified corroboration. Record wordings such as "largest in history," "record high," "sixth largest on record," "13 consecutive sessions" and "20 consecutive sessions of net buying" are the reports' wordings, not findings of this site.
- Brokerage-column disclosure and the boundary of use: the five "Yuan Zhifeng Column" items cited here (cnyes#1373951 / cnyes#1399062 / cnyes#1560649 / cnyes#1625104 / cnyes#1640163) are published on Anue by Anue Securities. Each issue opens with a "today's pick" stock together with a price target and a stop-loss level, the body contains phrases such as "we suggest buying on pullbacks," and the foot of the column links to that firm's Hong Kong model portfolio. They are therefore market commentary issued by a brokerage. This card uses only their checkable market data (index closes, point changes, day-on-day turnover changes, southbound net flows, short-selling ratios) and uses none of their single-stock picks, price targets, stop-loss levels or trading advice. This card does not constitute investment advice. Separately, Anue's market-close report of 2026-07-21 relays that "Haitong International subsequently raised its target price for Zhipu sharply to HK$2,300 and reiterated an outperform rating" [cnyes#1631024] — that is Haitong International's rating as relayed by Anue, not a recommendation of this site, and this site has not verified it with Haitong International.
- Cross-market figures are not comparable: Taiwan's weighted index (denominated in New Taiwan dollars), Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Hang Seng TECH indices (Hong Kong dollars) and Japan's Nikkei (yen) are indices of different markets with different constituents and trading hours. This card places the figures recorded by each source side by side and performs no conversion, no subtraction and no comparison on merit or causation. The only cross-market juxtaposition sentence made by a source itself comes from CNA#1572093, where the four-market figures were juxtaposed by CNA itself within a single article; this card reproduces it and says so. Where this card itself places markets side by side (in the frame-deconstruction section and in J-002), every item carries its own source and report date and is explicitly marked as Shen Guan's editorial statement, with no comparison and no conversion. This applies beyond indices, to turnover and traded value as well: the Hong Kong market turnover cited in this card is denominated in Hong Kong dollars, while Taiwan's traded value and institutional net buying/selling are denominated in New Taiwan dollars; in Chinese both are written with the same unit character, yet the currencies differ, so they cannot be compared directly, converted, or divided to obtain a multiple. One point must be stated explicitly: the five "Yuan Zhifeng Column" issues record Hong Kong figures using that unit character alone, and the words for "Hong Kong dollar" appear nowhere in their texts (this site examined the five public pages character by character on 2026-07-22; the hit count for both terms was zero in every one). The currency is therefore this card's own labelling, not the source's wording, and the basis for that labelling comes at two strengths: (a) turnover — the same outlet's Hong Kong market-close reports record the same item for the same session explicitly in Hong Kong dollars, and the figures agree with the column's (F-002 against F-003, and F-007 against F-008, both matching), so the basis is strong; (b) southbound Stock Connect flows — no source in this entire card records this item with a currency, and this card infers it from the column's own conventions (when the column moves to the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets it separately marks those figures as renminbi and notes that the same applies thereafter, which conversely indicates that the preceding Hong Kong passage is in another currency), so the basis is weak and this card records it as unverified. The Japanese and English editions both localise these two categories of amount as Hong Kong dollars; readers citing the southbound figures should know that the currency is this card's identification, not something stated by the source.
- Internal inconsistencies among the sources (reproduced, not adjudicated): (1) Hang Seng TECH Index — Anue's market-close report of 2026-07-10 records "closing at 5,420.31 points" [cnyes#1418732], which is inconsistent with the series formed by 4,731.56 points on 2026-07-09 [cnyes#1380769], 4,834 points in the 2026-07-16 column [cnyes#1560649], 4,623.17 points on 2026-07-17 [cnyes#1571874], 4,752 points in the 2026-07-20 column [cnyes#1625104] and 4,814.83 points on 2026-07-21 [cnyes#1631024]. This card uses the 5,420.31-point figure in no comparison and does not assert which figure is wrong. (2) MiniMax's lock-up release as a share of total shares — Anue's 2026-07-09 article states "the released shares account for as much as 63%" [cnyes#1374797], while the same outlet's 2026-07-10 article states "MiniMax released 153 million shares on the 9th (as much as 48.9% of total share capital)" [cnyes#1413192]. Two ratios published by the same outlet on consecutive days; this card reproduces both, adopts neither over the other, and does not assert which is wrong. (3) Zhipu's decline on 2026-07-20 — CNA records "fell sharply by 19.55%" [CNA#1616409] while Anue's market-close report records "down 19.56%" [cnyes#1616415]; this is a difference in the last decimal place and this card keeps both without choosing.
- Method note on the three-channel reconciliation: the "three channels" are (a) CNA's own same-day reports out of Taipei and out of Hong Kong, (b) Anue's Hong Kong market-close reports and Taiwan-market flow reports, and (c) the "Yuan Zhifeng Column" (Anue Securities). All three record the same trading sessions independently; this card lays them out day by day and attaches to each sentence its own source ID and report date. No figure from one channel is used to fill a gap in another; no averages are taken; no "best" figure is selected.
- Time bases: every sentence containing a comparative term ("rose / fell / up / down / increased / decreased / day on day / consecutive / record high / record low") states the trading session or measurement basis in the same sentence (for example, "on 2026-07-21," "down 5% day on day," "cumulative since the start of July," "for a 13th consecutive session"). The southbound "cumulative net buying since the start of July" figures are cumulative measures stated by each issue of the column with its own publication date. This card performs no addition or subtraction across those cumulative figures and does not estimate any decline between them.
- Analyst and fund-manager remarks are not official figures: the remarks cited here from Lin Ping-kuei (senior vice president, Lianbo Investment Trust), Chen Yi-kuang (chairman, Fubon Investment Advisory), Wang Chao-li (senior analyst) and Su Ting-yu (fund manager, Cathay Investment Trust) are all interview content as recorded in CNA reports. They are personal or institutional views, not official statistics, not forecasts of this site, and not investment advice.
- Forward-looking items: the statement in cnyes#1631024 that "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027" is a market expectation as recorded in that report, not a TSMC announcement and not an accomplished fact; this site has not verified it with TSMC. The tightening of Chinese export controls on AI and semiconductor technology recorded in storm#1631490 is a Reuters report citing the Financial Times and concerns measures under discussion, not published regulations.
- Unit notation: the Chinese-language sources state amounts in 億 (hundred million) and 兆 (trillion). This card re-expresses them in billions and trillions; this is a pure unit re-expression (one 億 = 100 million), not a derived calculation, and the sources' digits are preserved (for example, turnover stated as 8,356.24 hundred million New Taiwan dollars appears here as NT$835.624 billion).
- Company names: English renderings of company names are this card's translation or romanisation of the Chinese names used by the sources; where the sources give tickers, the tickers are reproduced. The sources' Chinese names and tickers govern.
- Rounding: CNA's Hong Kong reports mostly use whole-point index levels (24,562 / 25,143 / 25,132 points), while Anue's market-close reports mostly use two decimal places (24,562.24 / 25,143.05 / 25,132.29 points). This card keeps each notation exactly as its source states it, does not substitute one for the other, and does not add digits of its own.
F-Units

The same article also records that Zhipu's turnover surged to HK$16.9 billion on the first day of its release on 2026-07-08, and that for MiniMax "the released shares account for as much as 63%," with its share price having fallen from a March high to HK$323 in early July [cnyes#1374797].

F-006: Zhipu released 25.6816 million shares (5.76% of total share capital) on July 8 and MiniMax released 153 million shares (48.9%) on July 9
Anue's article of 2026-07-10: Zhipu (02513-HK) had 25,681,600 shares (5.76% of total share capital) released from lock-up on July 8, with released market value of more than HK$40 billion; MiniMax (00100-HK) had 153 million shares (as much as 48.9% of total share capital) released on July 9, with released market value of about HK$55 billion, and its share price plunged 17.98% that day to close at HK$297.4; as of the July 9 close, Zhipu's market capitalisation was HK$906 billion and MiniMax's was HK$93.3 billion [cnyes#1413192]. Measurement disclosure: the "market value involved" recorded in F-005 is SPDB International's measure of the whole-market total of lock-up expiries in each of those months, whereas the released market values recorded in this unit are single-company, single-stock measures. The two rest on different populations and are not the same statistic, so they cannot be added, subtracted, or used to derive a share of one another. This card places the two sets of figures side by side solely to reproduce each source as written, and computes no ratio between them on the reader's behalf. Further, whether SPDB International's "market value involved" denotes the sum of the market value of all shares released in each of those months, and whether it includes holdings that shareholders do not intend to sell, is not defined in the source text and has not been checked by this site with SPDB International — this card records the point as unverified and makes no determination.
> Citable conclusion: Zhipu had 25.6816 million shares (5.76% of total share capital) released from lock-up on 2026-07-08, and MiniMax had 153 million shares (48.9%) released on 2026-07-09.

The same article records the remarks of Chen Yi-kuang, chairman of Fubon Investment Advisory: although Taiwan stocks set the largest closing point gain on record that day, prices rose on shrinking volume and the market's appetite to chase remained conservative; one must watch whether foreign flows and turnover expand together [CNA#1631416].
> Citable conclusion: On 2026-07-21 Taiwan's three institutional investor categories were net buyers of NT$16.407 billion (investment trusts net buying NT$17.232 billion; foreign and mainland investors net selling NT$4.332 billion), with foreign investors net sellers for a 13th consecutive session.

F-020: On 2026-07-21 the New Taiwan dollar closed at 32.345 per U.S. dollar, down 9.7 fen, the weakest in about one year and three months; foreign-exchange market turnover of US$4.353 billion was the sixth largest on record
CNA's Taipei report of 2026-07-21 (reporter Pan Tzu-yu): Taiwan stocks rose 1,783.17 points that day for a record closing point gain, yet foreign investors kept remitting funds out, decoupling the New Taiwan dollar from the stock market. The New Taiwan dollar closed at 32.345 per U.S. dollar that day, down 9.7 fen (the source's unit; this card does not convert it), the weakest in about one year and three months. Total turnover in the Taipei and Cosmos foreign-exchange markets on 2026-07-21 surged to US$4.353 billion, the sixth largest on record. The same report records that foreign investors had already net sold Taiwan stocks for 13 consecutive sessions, exerting heavy depreciation pressure on the New Taiwan dollar; the currency opened at 32.22 that day, weakened steadily, touched a low of 32.442, and closed at 32.345 after central bank smoothing late in the session [CNA#1631368].
> Citable conclusion: On 2026-07-21 the New Taiwan dollar closed at 32.345 per U.S. dollar, down 9.7 fen and the weakest in about one year and three months, while foreign-exchange market turnover of US$4.353 billion was the sixth largest on record.

Anue's Hong Kong market-close report of 2026-07-21: the Hang Seng Index traded in a narrow range all day and closed 0.04% lower at 25,132.29; the Hang Seng TECH Index closed 1.32% higher at 4,814.83; the H-share (HSCEI) index closed 0.25% lower at 8,360.68. Chip and semiconductor names surged together that day, with Hua Hong up nearly 18% and SMIC up more than 8%. Under the heading of news flow the same report states: "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027, indicating that AI-driven semiconductor demand is extending from high-performance computing into mature-node areas such as power-management chips." The same report also records that Zhipu closed up nearly 37% that day, that Zhipu had announced the commissioning of a 1GW-class domestic AI computing data centre and completion of its acquisition of Zhongke Jiahe, and that Haitong International subsequently raised its target price for Zhipu sharply to HK$2,300 and reiterated an outperform rating [cnyes#1631024].

CNA's Hong Kong report of 2026-07-21 (reporter Chang Chien): the Hong Kong market held steady that day, with the Hang Seng Index closing just 10 points or 0.04% lower at 25,132, holding near its recent highs. The same report records that Beijing has continued to send stabilising signals to the stock market, including purchases of central state-owned enterprise shares by the two state capital platforms China Reform Holdings and Chengtong and buybacks by some central state-owned enterprises, and that the CSRC held an investor symposium the previous day. After rising 580 points the previous day, the Hang Seng continued to hover at high levels that day. AI and chip stocks rebounded sharply that day, with Zhipu surging 36.88% to close at HK$1,219 and Hua Hong rising 17.91% to close at HK$168 [CNA#1631019].

F-024: Reuters, citing the Financial Times — China is considering tightening export controls on AI and semiconductor technology, with Alibaba, ByteDance and Zhipu sending representatives to a Ministry of Commerce-led meeting
Storm Media's article of 2026-07-21: Reuters that day, citing a Financial Times report, said the Chinese government is considering tightening export controls on artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology. At a meeting led by China's Ministry of Commerce, companies including Alibaba, ByteDance and the AI start-up Zhipu sent representatives to discuss restrictions on the most advanced AI models — covering closed-source models and some open-weight models — and how to prevent the West from obtaining advanced Chinese technology. The same article records that Chinese officials also consulted domestic technology companies on how to prevent overseas chipmakers such as Qualcomm and TSMC from manufacturing advanced semiconductors based on designs by Chinese technology companies such as Huawei, Alibaba and ByteDance [storm#1631490].

J-Units
> Editorial judgements; all made by Shen Guan from facts already cited, none a sentence from any original text.
J-001: The fact that both markets fell on the same day by very different magnitudes was juxtaposed by the source itself, not assembled by this card
Per [F-010]: CNA's Hong Kong report of 2026-07-17 juxtaposes, within a single article, the same-day moves of the Hang Seng Index (-1.78%), Taiwan's weighted index (-6.47%) and the Nikkei (-4.03%), with South Korea closed. This card does only one thing with it: point out that the juxtaposition exists in the source text, and remind readers in Taiwan that the "Taiwan stocks have collapsed" single-day frame already had a cross-market comparison inside the very same article.
- basis_units: F-010
- type: Observation of text structure
- caveat: No cross-market conversion and no causal inference; the "milder decline because the bubble component is smaller" line is the view of market analysts as relayed by that report, not this site's judgement
J-002: That the two markets moved in opposite directions on 2026-07-21 becomes visible only when three independent records are laid side by side
Per [F-015][F-021][F-022][F-023]: Taiwan stocks rose 1,783.17 points on 2026-07-21 (CNA Taipei), while the Hang Seng fell 10 points or 0.04% (recorded separately by CNA Hong Kong, Anue's market-close report and the Yuan Zhifeng column). "They moved in opposite directions on the same day" is Shen Guan's editorial statement from comparing the dates and directions recorded in each report; it is not a sentence from any original text. The two markets differ in currency, constituents and trading hours, and this card offers no ranking, no causation and no conversion.
- basis_units: F-015, F-021, F-022, F-023
- type: Cross-source juxtaposition (each sentence carries its own citation; none are merged)
- caveat: The Taiwan and Hong Kong figures come from separate independent reports, and placing them side by side does not imply they are comparable
J-003: The catalyst hangs on a Taiwanese asset; the rally is booked in the Hong Kong market
Per [F-021]: in describing the same-day surge in Hong Kong chip stocks, Anue's market-close report of 2026-07-21 itself states, under the heading of news flow, that "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027." "The catalyst is a Taiwanese asset while the benefit is booked in Hong Kong semiconductor stocks" is Shen Guan's editorial inference from that text, not a sentence from the original. That report does not quantify any causal strength; neither does this card, and still less does it claim that TSMC has made any pricing decision.
- basis_units: F-021, F-022, F-027
- type: Observation of narrative framing
- caveat: The TSMC mature-node price increase is a market expectation, not a TSMC announcement; the TSMC capital expenditure range is a remark by an interviewed institutional figure, not an official document
J-004: On the day Taiwan set the record, flows, the currency and the institutional reading pointed in different directions
Per [F-015][F-018][F-019][F-020]: for the same session (2026-07-21), CNA and Anue separately recorded "a record point gain," "foreign and mainland investors net selling NT$4.332 billion for a 13th consecutive session," "investment trusts net buying NT$17.232 billion / a 20th consecutive session of net buying," and "the New Taiwan dollar at 32.345, the weakest in about one year and three months." This card only juxtaposes them and infers no causal relationship. As for the judgement that "the market is still supported mainly by domestic institutional buying," this card does not put it in its own words — it is the on-the-record wording of a named institutional figure inside the CNA report (Fubon Investment Advisory chairman Chen Yi-kuang) [F-018].
- basis_units: F-015, F-018, F-019, F-020
- type: Same-market, multi-source juxtaposition
- caveat: Each figure comes from its own source; this card has computed no sums and made no estimates; Chen Yi-kuang's remarks are the view of an interviewed institutional figure, not an official statistic and not investment advice
J-005: The output of a three-channel reconciliation includes the parts that do not match
Per [F-002][F-004][F-008][F-009][F-012][F-013][F-014][F-021][F-022][F-023]: for the Hang Seng closes of 2026-07-20 and 2026-07-21, the three channels agree (differing only in decimal notation). But Anue's Hang Seng TECH figure of 5,420.31 points for 2026-07-10 is inconsistent with the same outlet's other sessions. Reproducing the inconsistency, refusing to adjudicate which figure is wrong, and using that value in no comparison is this card's full accounting for the "three-channel reconciliation" method — writing only the parts that match would be selective citation dressed up as methodology.
- basis_units: F-002, F-004, F-008, F-009, F-012, F-013, F-014, F-021, F-022, F-023

- caveat: This site has not checked with Hang Seng Indexes Company or the publisher; the second inconsistency (MiniMax's released share ratio of 63% versus 48.9%) is in the Caveats section

P-001: Lin Ping-kuei, senior vice president, Lianbo Investment Trust — the market's focus is expected to return to corporate earnings growth
CNA's report of 2026-07-22 records Lin Ping-kuei's view: recent market volatility is driven mainly by liquidity and investor sentiment, with no great change in fundamentals; as second-quarter results and second-half business outlooks are released, the market's focus is expected to return to corporate earnings growth and industry trends. He also observes healthy sector rotation: in the week of 2026-07-17, when Taiwan stocks fell sharply, electronics were the centre of the correction while defensive sectors showed resilience and some financial and high-dividend names held up relatively well [CNA#1640945].

CNA's report of 2026-07-22 records Su Ting-yu's analysis: the recent sharp fall in technology stocks was mainly profit-taking at high levels, and what corrected was the share price rather than any weakening of industry trends or fundamentals; the market's investment direction is shifting from "liquidity-driven" to "fundamentals-driven" [CNA#1642332].

P-003: Wang Chao-li, senior analyst — the near-term focus shifts to U.S. technology companies' second-quarter results
CNA's report of 2026-07-21 records Wang Chao-li's point: the near-term market focus will shift to second-quarter results from U.S. technology companies, including Alphabet, Tesla, Micron and SK Hynix. He considers that U.S. technology stocks and the South Korean market have both fallen to important support zones, and that if technology stocks stabilise and rebound and the New Taiwan dollar steadies, the market may extend its rebound over the next week or two [CNA#1628181].

P-004: Chen Yi-kuang, chairman, Fubon Investment Advisory — watch whether foreign flows and turnover expand together
CNA's report of 2026-07-21 records Chen Yi-kuang's remarks: although Taiwan stocks set the largest closing point gain on record on 2026-07-21, prices rose on shrinking volume and the market's appetite to chase remained conservative, so near-term caution is warranted; only if foreign flows and turnover expand together can the strength of the rebound be confirmed [CNA#1631416].

Internal Citation Chain (linking back to published cards)
- CONNECT → ANK-2026-07-18-004, "Taiwan Stocks Fell 1,426.01 Points Week-on-Week; Total Listed Market Cap Down NT$4.6225 Trillion vs Prior Week (as of the July 9, 2026 close; per CNA July 13, 2026 report, not independently verified by this site with the TWSE)" (published 2026-07-18): that card recorded, on a weekly basis measured to the 2026-07-09 close, a 1,426.01-point weekly fall in Taiwan stocks and a NT$4.6225 trillion weekly drop in total listed market capitalisation, and unpacked the sector split in which electronics heavyweights led the decline. This card carries the same Taiwan timeline forward: CNA records the weighted index down 2,953 points or 6.47% on 2026-07-17 [F-010] and up 1,783.17 points on 2026-07-21 [F-015]. The figures in the two cards each carry their own source and report date; none are merged and no new differences are computed.
- CONTEXTUALIZE → ANK-2026-07-06-004, "Chapter three of Taiwan's stock-market correction, 'box-range consolidation under tight liquidity': the SpaceX listing (market value above US$2 trillion) plus SpaceX's reported bond plan of at least US$25 billion and Nvidia's US$25 billion corporate-bond issue weigh on money momentum; Taiwan stocks swung more than a thousand points intraday on July 3 before closing up at 46,780.62 as foreign investors net sold NT$77.782 billion…" (published 2026-07-06): that card described the early-July pattern of "box-range consolidation under tight liquidity" alongside foreign net selling. This card adds the latest text within that same liquidity frame as of 2026-07-21 — foreign and mainland investors net sold NT$4.332 billion that day for a 13th consecutive session [F-018], and the New Taiwan dollar hit its weakest level in about one year and three months that day [F-020]. The figures in the two cards follow their own sources and dates and are neither merged nor compared.
- CONTEXTUALIZE → ANK-2026-07-14-002, "Taiwan's June 2026 securities transaction tax net collection hit a record NT$84.9 billion (849億), crossing the NT$80 billion mark for the first time, per CNA's July 13, 2026 report on the Ministry of Finance's preliminary June 2026 nationwide tax revenue statistics…" (published 2026-07-14): that card recorded the historically high level of Taiwan's June 2026 market turnover (average daily trading value) on the Ministry of Finance's preliminary statistics basis. This card supplies a late-July turnover text for contrast — CNA records Taiwan's turnover on 2026-07-21 as NT$835.624 billion, with the original wording being that "turnover narrowed" [F-015][F-016]. The two cards use different measures (monthly tax statistics versus single-day turnover), and this card draws no comparison across them.
FAQ
Q: What record exactly did Taiwan stocks set on July 21, 2026? Was it a percentage record?
No. The wording used in CNA's Taipei reports of 2026-07-21 is "set a record for the largest closing point gain" [CNA#1627908] and "rewrote the records for the second-largest intraday point gain and the largest closing point gain" [CNA#1628181][CNA#1631416] — both are "points" measures. The weighted index closed that day at 44,232.87, up 1,783.17 points or 4.20%, on turnover of NT$835.624 billion [CNA#1627904]. The CNA texts contain no wording about any "percentage-gain record," so this card does not read it as one. All of these record wordings are as recorded in CNA's reports and have not been verified by this site with the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Q: Did Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rise or fall the same day, and can the two be compared directly?
CNA's Hong Kong report of 2026-07-21 (reporter Chang Chien) records the Hang Seng Index closing just 10 points or 0.04% lower at 25,132 [CNA#1631019]. Anue's market-close report of the same day independently records the Hang Seng at 25,132.29, down 0.04%, and the Hang Seng TECH Index up 1.32% at 4,814.83 [cnyes#1631024]. The Yuan Zhifeng column of 2026-07-22 independently records, for the same session, the Hang Seng closing at 25,132, down 10 points or 0.04% [cnyes#1640163]. The three channels agree, differing only in decimal notation. However, Taiwan's weighted index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index belong to different markets with different currencies, constituents and trading hours, so this card places the figures recorded by each source side by side without conversion, subtraction, or comparison on merit or causation.
Q: Hong Kong chip stocks surged on July 21 — what does that have to do with TSMC?
Per Anue's own Hong Kong market-close report of 2026-07-21: chip and semiconductor names surged together that day, with Hua Hong up nearly 18% and SMIC up more than 8%, and the reason the report gave under the heading of news flow was that "the market expects TSMC may raise mature-node prices in 2027" [cnyes#1631024]. Note that this is a "market expectation" as recorded in that report — not a TSMC announcement, not the content of a TSMC investor conference, and not verified by this site with TSMC. CNA's Hong Kong report of the same day independently records, for the same group of stocks, Zhipu surging 36.88% to HK$1,219 and Hua Hong rising 17.91% to HK$168 [CNA#1631019]. On TSMC's capital expenditure, the only text available to this card is the remark of Su Ting-yu, a fund manager at Cathay Investment Trust, in an interview on 2026-07-22 that "TSMC's recent investor conferences raised the full-year capital expenditure plan for a second time, to US$60 billion to US$64 billion" [CNA#1642332], which is an interviewed institutional figure's relayed account, not a TSMC official document.
Q: On the day Taiwan stocks set the largest closing point gain, did foreign investors come back?
Per CNA's report of 2026-07-21: the three institutional investor categories were net buyers of NT$16.407 billion that day, comprising dealers (proprietary trading) net buying NT$3.507 billion and investment trusts net buying NT$17.232 billion, but foreign and mainland Chinese investors net sold NT$4.332 billion, a 13th consecutive session of net selling, with the largest net sale in Innolux at 62,999 lots [CNA#1631416]. Anue independently records for the same day that investment trusts were net buyers for a 20th consecutive session and added financial-holding stocks [cnyes#1633995]. Another CNA report of the same day records the New Taiwan dollar closing at 32.345 per U.S. dollar, down 9.7 fen and the weakest in about one year and three months, with total turnover in the Taipei and Cosmos foreign-exchange markets of US$4.353 billion, the sixth largest on record [CNA#1631368]. Chen Yi-kuang, chairman of Fubon Investment Advisory, said in the CNA report that "the market is still supported mainly by domestic institutional buying" [CNA#1631416] — the view of an interviewed institutional figure, not an official statistic. All the figures above are as recorded in the relevant reports and have not been verified by this site with the Taiwan Stock Exchange or the central bank.
Q: What is the "three-channel reconciliation" this card refers to, and is there anything that does not match?
The three channels are (a) CNA's own same-day reports out of Taipei and out of Hong Kong, (b) Anue's Hong Kong market-close reports and Taiwan-market flow reports, and (c) the "Yuan Zhifeng Column" (published on Anue by Anue Securities). All three record the same trading sessions independently, and this card lays them out day by day with a source ID attached to each sentence. One item does not match: Anue's market-close report of 2026-07-10 records the Hang Seng TECH Index as "closing at 5,420.31 points" [cnyes#1418732], which is inconsistent with the series formed by the same outlet's 4,731.56 points on 2026-07-09 [cnyes#1380769], 4,834 points in the 2026-07-16 column [cnyes#1560649] and 4,623.17 points on 2026-07-17 [cnyes#1571874]; this card reproduces it, uses the 5,420.31-point figure in no comparison, and does not assert which figure is wrong (this site has not checked with Hang Seng Indexes Company or the publisher). A second item: on MiniMax's lock-up release as a share of total shares, Anue's 2026-07-09 article states 63% [cnyes#1374797] while its 2026-07-10 article states 48.9% [cnyes#1413192]; this card reproduces both without adjudication.
