Math B Exam Features Social Media 'Likes' Probability Question; Lower Difficulty Expected to Boost Raw Scores and Perfect Scorers

What this means

The 115th academic year College Subject Exam Math B paper included real-life context questions, such as the probability of liking social media posts. With simplified wording and reduced difficulty, raw scores and the number of perfect scorers are expected to rise compared to last year.

Story Text

(Central News Agency reporter Hsu Chi-wei, Taipei, July 14) The Math B exam of the 115th academic year College Subject Exam was held today as the third subject. Some questions integrated real-life scenarios, such as calculating the probability of liking articles on social media and pharmaceutical companies managing production costs and output. Candidates were required to translate these everyday contexts into mathematical expressions for computation. This year’s exam featured concise wording and reduced difficulty in challenging questions, leading to expectations of higher raw scores and an increased number of perfect scorers (60-level scores) compared to the previous year. The second day of the 115th academic year College Subject Exam took place today, with Math B scheduled in the third session. The University Entrance Examination Center invited high school teachers to participate in the question review process, while the Ministry of Education engaged a group of Taipei city high school mathematics educators to assist in analyzing the exam content.Reviewing high school teachers noted in written feedback that the Math B questions covered the curriculum across all three high school grades. The elective-only topic of 'linear programming' appeared in the multiple-choice section, closely resembling textbook examples.Regarding question design, teachers observed that each major question progressed from easy to difficult, with multiple-choice options also ordered from simple to complex. Numerical data were simplified, and verbose descriptions minimized, allowing students to focus on the core assessment points. Content designated for advanced 12th-grade Math B accounted for 41 out of 60 points.Su Shun-sheng, a teacher from Yang Ming High School, stated that Math B has been included in the subject exam since last year. This year’s questions were shorter in text length than last year’s, giving students sufficient time to double-check calculations. He emphasized that students who did not give up on math could achieve good results, and raw scores are likely to surpass last year’s. Last year, Math B had the highest number of perfect scorers among all subject exams, and this number is expected to increase further this year.Su noted that this year’s exam emphasized conceptual understanding—many questions could be solved immediately upon grasping the underlying concept, without requiring additional assumptions. With reduced reading load, the key differentiator between high and low scorers was students’ attentiveness.Hsu Wei-ming, a teacher from Chien Kuo High School, pointed out that this year featured many foundational questions, allowing students who thoroughly studied the textbook to secure basic points. Linear programming, unique to Math B and absent in Math A, was tested again this year. With challenging questions less difficult than last year and fewer cross-topic integration problems, student stress levels were comparatively lower. (Edited by Chen Ching-fang) 1150714
