Central News Agency(CNA reporter Cao Yayan, New Taipei, 25th) A 46-year-old police officer from the Nanshi Police Station in Zhonghe, New Taipei City, passed away on the 23rd due to cardiac arrest after working 17 consecutive hours on the 22nd due to a heavy caseload. The precinct has launched a fundraising drive to help with funeral expenses and emphasized that it will strictly require immediate dispatch of relief officers if an officer continues to handle cases after their shift. It is understood that the officer, surnamed Chen, started his shift at 6 AM on the 22nd. Around 2 PM, while on patrol, he apprehended a suspect in a drug-driving case. After completing that, around 4 PM, he received a report of a fight and rushed to the scene with colleagues, bringing the involved parties back for investigation. By the time the statements were taken, his shift had ended. However, the police station apprehended another drug-driving suspect around 7 PM, and at the same time, had to handle multiple public reports and notifications of illegal parking. Therefore, Officer Chen voluntarily stayed to escort the suspect to the district prosecutor's office, only returning to the police station to file his departure at around 11 PM.After working 17 consecutive hours, Officer Chen returned home to rest. The next morning, when his family tried to wake him, they found him unresponsive. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to the hospital, but ultimately passed away from cardiac arrest. It is reported that Officer Chen was the sole breadwinner for his family, which includes his father, wife, and two sons. The Zhonghe Precinct has proactively initiated a "Police Heart Fundraising" campaign to alleviate the family's financial burden. The Zhonghe Precinct stated that Officer Chen had served for 17 years, was dedicated to his duties, and always willing to help others. He often took the initiative to guide and assist new colleagues with cases during his off-duty hours, and was a kind and responsible police officer. The precinct chief and all staff members are deeply saddened by Officer Chen's passing. A funeral assistance team has been established to provide full support to the family in handling funeral arrangements and to strive for the most favorable compensation. The Zhonghe Precinct emphasized that a thorough review has been conducted regarding this incident. In the future, all on-duty supervisors will be strictly required to immediately assess and dispatch available police personnel for relief whenever an officer needs to continue handling cases after their shift. Concurrently, efforts will be made to continuously improve duty dispatch operations and ensure the proper implementation of work-rest transitions to protect the health rights of our colleagues.
