Marine Foods Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Marine Foods") endorsed "Ocean Garbage Zero Week," a cleanup activity project promoted jointly by The Nippon Foundation and the Ministry of the Environment to reduce marine plastic waste, and carried out a nationwide cleanup project. This initiative, which marks the third time it has been held following its implementation in March and June of last year (2025), has expanded in scale from the previous focus on the vicinity of its headquarters to include factories and business sites nationwide. The number of participants significantly increased from 35 in the previous event to over 200.■ About "Ocean Garbage Zero Week""Ocean Garbage Zero Week" (Note 1) is a joint project between The Nippon Foundation and the Ministry of the Environment, which promotes "Plastic Smart." The objective of this initiative is to raise awareness and foster a mindset of not generating marine waste by conducting cleanup activities involving the public across Japan.Globally, approximately 8 million tons of marine waste are generated annually, and it is said that by 2050, the amount of marine waste, including plastics, will exceed the amount of fish. Furthermore, about 80% of this marine waste is estimated to originate from land (cities) and flow into the sea via rivers, meaning it is generated from our daily lives.(Note 1) "Ocean Garbage Zero Week 2026" Guidelines■ Purpose of ActivitiesThis initiative, which has been carried out in the vicinity of our headquarters (Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo) until now, has been expanded to include all group company locations nationwide for the first time to promote environmental initiatives more broadly. As a result, over 200 employees participated, and cleanup activities were conducted at multiple locations, including factories and business sites across the country. The scope of the activities was also extended beyond coastal areas to include regions that contribute to marine waste generation, such as rivers and urban areas.During the actual cleanup, various types of waste, including cigarette butts, plastic waste such as PET bottles, empty cans, and paper products, were collected. This provided each employee with an opportunity to personally realize the reality of waste generated from daily life flowing into the sea.■ Activity OverviewMonth of ImplementationMay and June 2026Number of Participants211 company volunteersNumber of Participating Locations12 locations nationwideCleanup LocationsTotal 11 prefectures:Hokkaido, Iwate Prefecture, Tokyo Metropolis (including 2 headquarters locations), Aichi Prefecture, Mie Prefecture, Osaka Prefecture, Oita Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture, Okinawa PrefectureNumber of Garbage Bags Collected (30L)117 bags in totalThis expansion of activities was not merely about increasing the scale of cleanup efforts but also aimed at "permeating environmental awareness by involving more employees." In particular, as a company handling marine food products, the conservation of the marine environment is a critical issue directly linked to our business foundation, making understanding and action at the site level indispensable. By having all nationwide locations participate in activities during the same period, it also helped build a foundation for sharing environmental issues throughout the company.Furthermore, participants commented, "It was an opportunity to interact with employees from other departments with whom I don't usually have much contact," and "I felt a horizontal connection beyond our respective locations." Through collaboration across locations and departments, the initiative not only fostered environmental awareness but also contributed to revitalizing internal communication.■ Comment from Katsunori Fujiwara, Representative Director, President and Executive OfficerWhile cleanup activities may be small steps, as a food company dealing in marine products, we feel a responsibility to work towards the conservation of the marine environment. Marine Foods will continue to engage in initiatives that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society and social contribution, while collaborating with stakeholders.
