The issue involving Zhonglian edible oil containing excessive carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene has now identified five abnormal batches, affecting a total of 50 product items. As of today, 1,641.4 metric tons of affected oil products have been recovered. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in the evening that the guidelines for re-shelving products previously withdrawn as a precautionary measure, originally scheduled for release today, will now be postponed until July 14.Since the outbreak of the benzo[a]pyrene contamination in Zhonglian Oils, the FDA has required Zhonglian to complete the precautionary withdrawal of 29 batches of oil products manufactured between April and June 2024. This includes five batches that exceeded safety limits, as well as derivative products made by companies such as Taisun, Fushou, and Fumao using the affected oils. All withdrawals were to be completed by 12:00 PM on July 10.For precautionary withdrawn products to be re-shelved, each batch of oil must undergo individual testing and be confirmed to meet safety standards before downstream processed products can resume sales and shelf placement. The Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration held a meeting today to discuss the re-shelving criteria, originally expected to be released today, but later announced the delay until July 14.According to the FDA's latest data released today:- Batch 1: On June 30, Zhonglian reported that oil tank 315 failed inspection. This batch of soybean salad oil, approximately 1,300 metric tons, was manufactured on April 4, with lot number 315-1150404. As of 11:00 AM today, 18 product items were affected, and 410.4 metric tons have been recovered.- Batch 2: On July 7, Taisun reported non-compliant blended oil made using oil from Zhonglian's tank 313. This batch of soybean salad oil, approximately 1,309.52 metric tons, was manufactured on May 12, lot number 313-1150512. As of 11:00 AM today, 24 product items were affected, and 505.4 metric tons have been recovered.- Batch 3: On July 9, Nanqiao reported an anomaly using soybean salad oil from Zhonglian's tank 315, approximately 1,305.9 metric tons, manufactured on May 10, lot number 315-1150510. As of 11:00 AM today, 16 product items were affected, and 319.6 metric tons have been recovered.- Batch 4: On July 12, Fushou reported an issue with its peanut-flavored blended oil made using oil from Zhonglian's tank 318. This batch of soybean salad oil, approximately 533.85 metric tons, was manufactured on April 6, lot number 318-1150406. As of 11:00 AM today, 14 product items were affected, and 243.6 metric tons have been recovered.- Batch 5: Also on July 12, Fushou reported non-compliant unsaturated soybean salad oil made using oil from Zhonglian's tank 314, approximately 1,307.43 metric tons, manufactured on April 10, lot number 314-1150410. As of 11:00 AM today, 24 product items were affected, and 162.4 metric tons have been recovered.
